Reflecting on the meaning of baptism

The necessity of baptism can be understood in

relation to Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus:

“Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the

kingdom of God without being born of water

and Spirit.” (John 3:5) The Church’s mandate and

mission given to her by the Lord is clear at the

end of Matthew’s gospel: “Go therefore and

make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in

the name of the Father and of the Son and of

the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey

everything that I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

 

Paul’s  description of the baptismal process and its consequences for new life are crucial for any understanding of baptism: “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.” (Romans 6:3-5)

 

Baptisms at SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish

Baptisms are celebrated on the 1st & 3rd Sundays of every month. Parents need to be registered active parishioners prior to arranging the Baptism at SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish. If this is a first born child, the parents are required to attend a Pre-Baptismal class. Both sponsors should be adults, and one an active practicing Catholic. Call the rectory office a few months in advance to make arrangements.
